Sermon Series: CHASING THE WIND – Sermon #22

“Life is Uncertain – Live it by Faith”
Ecclesiastes 11:1-8

I am sure you are aware that even our best-laid plans don’t always work out – a message that we have seen over and over throughout the Book of Ecclesiastes. So how are we to live in the face of the uncertainly of life? That’s the question that Solomon answers at the beginning of Chapter 11. And I think that the answer certainly surprised his readers. And perhaps it will surprise us as well.
In many ways, this is one of the easiest passages to understand in the entire book of Ecclesiastes. The thoughts all seem to be related to each other and to a common theme. But there is still some room for a variety of interpretations that depend almost entirely on what the author meant in verse 1. In today’s message we will explore: the three schools of thought surrounding verse 1, and, life is uncertain – live it by faith:

I.  The Three Schools of Thought:

A.  Commercial Activity –

B.  Taking Risks –

C.  Sowing and Reaping –

II.  Life is Uncertain – Live it by Faith:  Eccl. 11:1-8

     A.  Living by faith requires us to be PATIENT (v.1).
     B.  Living by faith requires us to be GENEROUS (vv.1-2)
     C.  Living by faith requires to TRUST GOD (vv.3-5)
     D.  Living by faith requires us to be PERSISTENT (v.6)
     E.  Living by faith requires us to be JOYFUL (vv.7-8)

Overall, “taking risks” seems to be the theme of this passage. In light of the uncertainly we face, our natural tendency is to withdraw and to try and protect that which we already have. But in fact, we are to do just the opposite.
We need to take a risk to sow into the lives of others, to be generous with our time, talent and treasure, to make a decision and work hard and trust God for the results, and to enjoy whatever days God gives us on this earth.
