“The Dwelling Place of God”

1 Corinthians 6:15-20

When God gave His plans for the Tabernacle, and later on the Temple, He set forth in no uncertain terms the plain fact that He demanded purity in the materials and construction, otherwise, He would never fill it with His glory. God will not fill a dirty temple.

This morning, I want to focus for a while on this concept of Christians being the “temple of God.” I would like, in doing so, to draw some comparisons between these earthly, fleshy temples and the temple that stood there in Jerusalem. I would like to preach on the idea of: THE DWELLING PLACE OF GOD.

God’s Dwelling Place is A Place of DEDICATION:

A.  The earthly temple.

B.  Our physical bodies.

II.  A Place of DEVOTION

God’s Dwelling Place is A Place of DEVOTION

A.  The earthly temple.

B.  Our physical bodies.

1. Present them as living sacrifices (Rom. 12:1-2)

2. Practice the presence of Christ (Heb.13:5)

3. Place our bodies in God’s hand for service (Rom. 6:16)

III.  A Place of DEATH:

God’s Dwelling Place is A Place of DEATH:

A.  The earthly temple.

B.  Our physical bodies (cf. Col. 3:1-9)

Colossians 3:1-11 – Death to Life Experience

  1. Personal Spiritual Growth Command (vv.1-5a)- “Mortify” = put to death, dethrone, starve, deprive of power.
  1. Basic Reasons for Spiritual Growth Command (vv.5b-9)

a. Sinful exertions from the past (vv.5b-7)

b. Sinful tendencies of the present (vv.8-9)

3. Theological Summation (vv.9b-11)

IV.  A Place on public DISPLAY

God’s Dwelling Place is A Place on public DISPLAY

A.  The earthly temple.

B,  Our physical bodies.

1.The property of Christ (vv.13-14)

2.The member of Christ (v.15)

3.The temple of Christ (vv.19-20

Yes, our physical bodies are our bodies, but if we are saved, it is still the temple of God. So, how are we treating the House of God this morning? Are we totally Dedicated to Jesus this morning? Are we using our body to worship Him in true Devotion?  Have we put those things to Death in our life that dishonor Him? Is our life a pleasing Display to the saving grace of God? If there are needs, bring them to Jesus, won’t you?
