“Thank God for Deacons”
I. The Problems Facing the Church: Acts 6:1
A. The problem of MULTIPLICATION (v.1a, “And in those days, when the number of the disciples was multiplying”)
B. The problem of MURMURING (v.1b, “there arose a complaint against the Hebrews by the Hellenists”)
C. The problem of MINISTRY (v.1c, “because their widows were neglected in the daily distribution”).
II. The Priorities Facing the Church: Acts 6:2
A. The priority of PREACHING (v.2, “It is not desirable that we should leave the word of God”).
B. The priority of PEOPLE (v.2b, “serve tables”).
III. The Proposal Facing the Church: Acts 6:3-7
A. The command given to the church (v.3a, “Choose seven men . . . whom we may appoint over this business”).
B. The challenge facing the church (v.3b – special traits of Deacons)
1. They were to be saved men – “seek out from among you”
2. They were to be good men – “of honest report”
3. They were to be godly men – “full of the Holy Spirit”
4. They were to be gifted men – “full . . . of wisdom”
C. The choice(s) facing the church (vv.5-6)
IV. The Example Set Before the Church: 1 Tim. 3:8-13
A. A word about a “Deacon’s Marriage” (v.12a)
B. A word about a “Deacon’s Household” (v.12b)
C. A word about a “Deacon’s Wife” (v.11)
1. Her temperament – “grave”
2. Her tongue – “not slanderers”
3. Her temperance – “sober”
4. Her trustworthiness” – “faithful in all things”
Do we still need the office of Deacon and Deaconess in this day? Yes, we still need Deacons and Deaconess! Beyond that, we need the right kind of Deacons and Deaconess!
We need men and women who will take up the mantel of service in these days. We need men and women who are good, godly, and gifted, to meet the needs of the church. We need servants!
