Sermon Series: CHASING THE WIND – Sermon #12
“Standing in Awe of God”
King Solomon had visited the courtroom, the marketplace, the highway, and the palace. Now he pays a visit to the temple, that magnificent building whose construction he had supervised. He watched the worshipers come and go, praising God, praying, sacrificing, and making vows. He noted that many of them were not at all sincere in their worship, and they left the sacred house of God in worse spiritual condition than when they had entered. What was their sin? They were robbing God of the reverence and honor that He deserved. Their acts of worship were hurried, insincere, and hypocritical.
We are admonished about standing in AWE of our Holy and Righteous God. In this passage, there are five truths that demonstrate how to be wise as we approach God and stand in awe of Him:
I. We Are to Approach God to Listen, Not to Talk: Eccl. 5:1
II. We Are to Approach God in Humility, Not Making Hasting Judgments: Eccl. 5:2
III. We Are to Approach God in Obedience, Not With Boastings: Eccl. 5:3
IV. We Are to Approach God with Integrity, Not Rashness: Eccl. 5:5-6
V. We Are to Approach God In Fear, Not Focusing On Self: Eccl. 5:6-7
CONCLUSION: I Stand Amazed . . . .
. . . that God would even accept human worship.
. . . that humans can render such worship as God can accept.
. . . that sincere worship of God is possible.
. . . that God does not accept all worship, and that He condemns worship that is merely external.
