Sermon Series: HE’S MORE THAN WONDERFUL #1
“Jesus Christ – The Word of God”
The Gospel of John was written by the Apostle John in about 85 AD. It was the last of the four Gospels to be written. The first three Gospels (Matthew, Mark and Luke) are called the Synoptic Gospels. The word “synoptic” means “to see together.” This means that the first three Gospels contain many of the same stories and teachings, but told from different angles or perspectives. Yet, each Gospel is fully inspired by God and consistent in its treatment of the Person and Work of our Lord Jesus Christ. John’s Gospel is different! In it we see a side of Christ that the other Gospel writers do not touch on.
In the opening chapter of his Gospel, the apostle John paints a picture of Jesus: The Word of God, and it’s that image that we want to focus in on today. Let’s look together at Jesus: The Word of God. Three truths are revealed in these verses about the Word of God. Jesus Christ is the pre-existent, personalized, proclaiming Word of God.
I. Jesus Christ Is the Pre-Existent Word: John 1:1-3
A. He is the CONSTANT Word (v.1a, “In the beginning was
B. He is the RELATIONAL Word (v.1b, “and the Word was
C. He is the GLORIOUS Word (v.1c, “and the Word was God”)
D. He is the CREATIVE Word (v.3)
II. Jesus Christ Is the Personalized Word: John 1:14
A. The Manner of Christ’s Incarnation (v.14a, “the Word was
became flesh and dwelt among us”)
B. The Mystery of Christ’s Incarnation (v.14, “Word became
-was made – flesh”)
C. The Splendor of Christ’s Incarnation (v.14c, “we beheld
His glory . . .”)
III. Jesus Christ Is the Proclaiming Word: John 1:18
A. Christ came to proclaim LIGHT (vv.4-9)
B. Christ came to proclaim LIFE (vv.10-13)
Have you ever met Jesus in the free pardon of your sin? Now is your time. Jesus stands ready to reveal the Father to you. He waits for you to respond to His light so He can give you of His life. Will you do what you need to do this morning and come to Jesus?
