Introducing to the Book of Ecclesiastes

Ecclesiastes 1:1-3

Introduction:

Why Ecclesiastes? As with all Old Testament scripture, the book of Ecclesiastes was written:

  • For our LEARNING (Romans 15:4)
  • For our ADMONITION (1 Cor. 10:11)
  • For our SPIRITUAL DEVELOPMENT (2 Tim. 3:16-17)

I.  Introduction To The Book of Ecclesiastes:

 A. The TITLE of the book (“Qoheleth” – “words of the preacher”).

B. The DATE and AUTHOR of the book – Internal evidence points to King Solomon (970-930 B.C.):

  1. Solomon’s wisdom (1:16; cf. 1 Kings 3:12)
  2. Solomon’s building activities (2:4-6; cf. 1 Kings 7:1-12)
  3. Solomon’s wealth (2:7-9; cf. 2 Chron. 9:13-28).

 C.  The MESSAGE of the book (1:2, “All is vanity”)

 1.  The futility of life “under the sun” (1:2, 14). Key words “vanity” occurs 35 times in 29 verses; and “under the sun” occurs 29 times in 27 verses.

2.  The importance of serving God throughout life (11:9-12; 12:1, 13-14) which emphasizes two realities:

a.  The meaning of life is not found in life’s experiences.

b.  The meaning of life is found in serving God, our Creator.

 D.  Ecclesiastes and the GOADS and NAILS (12:11)

II. Prologue To The Book of Ecclesiastes: Eccl. 1:1-3

A. The AUTHOR is identified (1:1, “the son of David . . .”).

B.  The THEME is stated (1:2, “Vanity of vanities”).

1. The word “profit” (yithron) –

2. The word man (‘adam) –

3.The words “under the sun”

C.  The QUESTION is raised (1:3, “What profit . . . ?).

 1. Is there any value or profit for all the things we do on this earth?

2. What can be learned from personal observation?

CONCLUSION:  Let’s Wrap It Up for Today!

  1. The Bible answers life’s most often asked questions – Who am I? Where did I come from? Why am I here?
  2. Ecclesiastes addresses such questions which is why it is worthy of our thorough investigation.
  3. The “other” Preacher, whose name is Jesus, also speaks. Have you followed His words? (Matt. 7:21-23)
