Sermon Series: CHASING THE WIND – Sermon #21

“Don’t Be a Fool” (Part 2)

Ecclesiastes 10:1-20

Before he concluded his discourse, Solomon thought it wise to remind his readers once again of the importance of wisdom and the danger of folly. (The word “folly” is used nine times in this chapter). Having laid down the principle (vv.1-3), Solomon then applied it to four different types of “fools.”

I.  Don’t Be A Foolish Ruler:  Eccl. 10:4–7
A.  Beware of being PROUD (v.4)
B.  Beware of being too PLIABLE (vv.5-7, easily influenced,
easily swayed, unyielding)
II.  Don’t Be A Foolish Worker:  Eccl. 10:8-11
#1 – (v.8a) – Digging a pit:
#2 – (v.8b) – Tearing down a wall:

#3 (v.9) – Quarrying stones:

#4 (v.10) – Splitting logs:

#5 – (v.11) – Snake charming:
III.  Don’t Be A Foolish Talker:  Eccl. 10:12-15
A.  A fool’s words are DESTRUCTIVE (v.12)

In Scripture, destructive words are compared to:

  1. Weapons of war (Prov. 25:18)
  2. A fire (James 3:5-6)
  3. A poisonous beast (James 3:7-8)

The Bible says: “Whoever guards his mouth and tongue keeps his soul from troubles” (Prov. 21:23)

B.  A fool’s words are IRRATIONAL (v.13)
C.  A fool’s words are UNCONTAINABLE (v.14a)
D.  A fool’s words are BOASTFUL (vv.14b-15)
IV.  Don’t Be A Foolish Leader:  Eccl. 10:16-20
 A.  Foolish leaders are characterized by INDULGENCE

God’s Word………

  • Warns against placing a novice into major leadership positions (1 Tim. 3:6).
  • Cites the specific personal and character traits required of pastors, deacons, and their wives (1 Tim. 3:1-13).
B.  Foolish leaders are characterized by UNSELESSNESS (v.18)
C.  Foolish leaders are characterized by INDIFFERENCE (v.19)
D.  Foolish leaders are characterized by IMPROPRIETY (v.20)

Everything said about wisdom and folly points us again to 2:24–3:22 and the need to take life day by day from the hand of God. The best thing we can do is to trust God, do our work, accept what God sends us, and enjoy each day of our lives to the glory of God (3:12–15, 22; 5:18–20; 8:15; 9:7–10).
