Sermon Series – MISSION POSSIBLE #1
“The Church – Built on “‘The Rock'”
This morning we start a new preaching series I’ve titled, MISSION POSSIBLE! Our selected text for today’s study is one of the great texts of Scripture. Some people claim it is great because of the controversy that surrounds it, but controversy is not the basis for making something great. It is great because it describes so clearly the state of man “ blind and without understanding“ and the mercy of God in intervening into the life of man so that he may come to know the truth. It is a great text because it centers on God’s ability to use people that yield themselves to Him.
Two lines of truth will be drawn from this text: the most important question ever asked, and, the most important entity ever established.
I. The Most Important Question Ever Asked: 16:13-17
A. The question of PUBLIC CONSENSUS (vv.13-14)
B. The question of PERSONAL CONVICTION (vv.15-17)
1 Jesus is the CHRIST –
2. Jesus is the SON OF THE LIVING GOD –
II. The Second Most Important Entity Ever Established: Matt. 16:18-20
A. Who is the BUILDER of this entity? (v.18, “I will build My church”)
The action of the verse is building the church and the One that performs the action of building is Jesus Christ.
B. What is the STRENGTH of this entity? (v.18, “and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against ii“)
This is not the picture of Hades attacking Christ’s church, but of death’s possible victory over the church. Christ’s church will prevail and survive because He has burst open the gates of Hades and has come forth as a conqueror.
C. What is the AUTHORITY of this entity? (vv.19-20)
Peter (and every preacher) will use the keys of the kingdom when he (they) proclaims the terms of salvation in Christ.
In a world where public consensus with all its pluralism and inclusivism is prevalent, we must make a bold statement that we are unashamedly convinced that Jesus Christ is the Christ, the Son of the Living God. And, that He is building His church, and He uses people as His building materials. Are you ready and willing to be used by Jesus in that manner?
