Sermon Series: GOD AND HUMAN SEXUALITY – Sermon #3

“As It Was In the Days of Sodom & Gomorrah”
Genesis 19:1-11

Introduction:

Sodom and Gomorrah were two cities in what they called “The Plains,” at the southwest corner of the Dead Sea. There were actually five cities in this area known as the PENTAPOLIS. All five cities were known to be very sinful.

It is easy to use Sodom and Gomorrah as a byword; to separate ourselves from them because, “Of course, they deserved to die . . . . We know what God thinks about homosexuality.” Yes, we do — HE HATES IT. But we must be willing, also, to recognize that, though homosexuality was the sin that finally wore God’s patience with Sodom, there were other sins in Sodom and Gomorrah, for there were not even ten righteous people there (Gen. 18:32).

Let’s take a tour of the city, just hours before all its inhabitants were wiped off the map. We’ll take notice of two things: the righteousness of Lot and the wickedness of Sodom.

I.  The Righteousness Of Lot: Gen. 19:1-4

       A.  His position (v.1a)

       B.  His invitation (vv.1b-2)

       C. His protection from the Sodomites (vv.2b-4)

II.  The Wickedness Of Sodom: Gen. 19:4-11

      A.  The perversion of the city (vv.4-5)

      B.  The pleading of Lot (vv.6-8)

      C.  The pressing of the mob (v.9)

      D.  The power of the angels (vv.10-11)

CONCLUSION:

Our culture and Christ’s Church are ripe for judgment. We may be eternally saved but that doesn’t make us immune to discipline. All will be judged according to their works.
