Sermon Series – ALL YOU NEED IS FAITH – #3
“Abraham – Faith That Obeys God”
Abraham walks tall as the great historic example of faith in action. He has a unique place not only in Jewish, but also in salvation history; not only demonstrating the initial commitment, but also the continuing demands of the life of faith. For him, faith meant stepping out on God’s word into the unknown, leaving behind a civilization of security which he knew well.
Abraham demonstrates a faith that waits on God while being obedient to the word of God. His obedient faith in God was rooted in God’s call on his life and, and his perseverance even though he didn’t have all the answers.
I. Faith That Obeys God Is Rooted In God’/s Call On Our Life: Heb. 11:8a, “By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called” (See: Genesis 12:1-4 – The Call of Abraham)
A. God’s command to Abraham (v.1)
B. God’s covenant with Abraham (vv.2-3)
C. Abraham’s commitment to God (v.4)
II. Faith That Obeys God Perseveres Even When It Doesn’t Have All The Answers: Heb. 11:8-19
A. Our faith must be obedient even when we don’t know where we’re going (vv.8-10)
B. Our faith must be obedient even when we don’t know how God’s plan will be accomplished (vv.11-12)
C. Our faith must be obedient even when we don’t know when God’s plan will be fulfilled (vv.13-16)
1.We must live by faith until we die (v.13a)
2.We may die before our promises become a reality (v.13b)
3.We must be real about who we really are (v.13c
D. Our faith must be obedient even when we don’t know why God does what He does (vv.17-19)
- Are we ready to obey any call of God?
- Do we feel ourselves to be “strangers and pilgrims on the earth,” or could we take an eternity of our present life provided we are comfortable?
- Do we have the faith which can laugh at impossibilities rather than disbelieve God’s Word?
- Have we unreservedly consecrated to God our soul, our life, our all?
